C5: An explanation of the influences of codes of practice and ethics on actual practice and conduct.
Nurses have a very demanding job as they work long hours in stressful situations, so they therefore become easily tired because of the strains from working.
Because of this it is essential that they are aware of the codes of practice and ethics they have to follow.
Nurses have to be able to work within the guide lines in the code or practice and code of ethics before treating any client as they need to be aware of the policies and guideline set before providing any treatment or care in any way. They should also be aware of what they can and cannot do involving treating and caring for a client.
Nurses are responsible for there own action and can be struck off by the NMC if the client feels they have not been mistreated in any way, they have the right to complain against the nurse’s they were treated by any other staff who they were treated by and the ward where they may have stayed.
Other members of staff working with the nurse may inform management or any mistreatment or negligence from the nurse to a client. This can then be reported to the NMC where an internal investigation will be carried out. This can result in the nurse then being dismissed depending on the severity of misconduct reported.
The NMC regularly encourages working to the code of practice and ethics. All nurses are answerable to the code or practice and ethics regardless of the types or work they do or the grade that they work at.
Responsibility to know about the code of practice and any codes of ethics is therefore down to the nurse as they should take up any training opportunities to improve their knowledge and be aware or any new policies and guide lines set. There is no excuse to any nurse of not following guide lines. They are expected to carry out a safe practice which involves respecting and putting into practice any polices and guide line set out in the code of practice and ethics.
An example of how nurses should provide safe practice; if an accident and emergency unit id full and the department can therefore no long cope with any more client of any kind the department should then be closed down as it would not be safe practice to carry on seeing more clients. This would then prevent any negligent care.
The code of practice and code of ethics have a profound effect on how nurses carry out there jobs and collect information.
Nurses should make sure client information is regularly collected and kept up to date which will avoid any misconduct; this also makes sure the client does not receive any treatment or medication that could hinder the health of the client.
