Unit 202 Maintain Health and Safety in the salon
All parts of this assessment must be completed satisfactorily considering the demands of industry requirements, Health and Safety at Work ACT, control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations and Electricity at Work Act.
The assignment is in two parts:
Task 1 s underpinning knowledge questions
Task2 i) and ii) are activities involving research and the production of reports/leaflets/posters
Task 1 Knowledge questions

Q1 State the importance of each of the following in maintaining health and safety in the salon
a) Personal Presentation – Is important as you need to wear clothes according to the salon and also clothes that fit properly and feel comfortable other wise you could catch on equipment and cause an accident.
b) Personal Hygiene – Is important as you need to be clean when working with other people. You could also pass on infection
c) Conduct- is important other wise you could cause an accident
Q2 Give two examples of potential sources of infection and each state how he risk is minimised
* Hepatitis B-Wash all towels and gowns after use in 60? wash
* Hepatitis C-Sterilise all equipment and tools in sterilises.
Q3 a) Give Three examples of methods used to control infection.
* Chemicals
* UV Rays
* Auto Claves
b) Identify one limitation of each of these methods
* Chemicals- cannot be used on any electrical equipment
* UV Rays- have got to hit every part of equipment so it takes time.
* Auto Claves – can only use on metal tools
Q4 List two ways in which safety of electrical equipment can be maintained.
* Check it works regularly
* Placing all hot equipment on heat protecting mats.
Q5 a) State the difference between a hazard and a risk
A hazard could cause harm and a risk is likelihood of harm occurring from a hazard.
b) Briefly describe two hazards that may occur in the salon
* A stylist using electrical equipment that are broken.
* Water spilt on floor
c) Give one example of a hazard that needs to be referred to a manager
* A broken mirror
Q6 Briefly describe the correct method of disposing each of the following:
* General waste- Is placed in your house hold waste bin provided by you council, following salon policy and manufacturers instructions
* Waste Chemicals -some types of chemical waste can be placed with the house hold rubbish i.e. smoke alarms but other chemical wastes like medications can be returned back to the chemist. Any left over chemical need to be diluted with water then pored down sink.
* Sharps – sharp objects include broken glass, razor blades, sewing needles, clinical glass, knives, scissors, straight razors, screws, nails, axes, hatchets, lawnmower blades and light bulbs. Sharp objects must be placed in a sharps box clearly marked and put at the curb away from other rubbish and have it collected by local council.
* Contaminated waste- are disposed of by being burnt or put in an enclosed bag following salons policy and manufacturers instructions

* Gloves
* Aprons
* Face Mask
Q8 Briefly explain what is meant by the following terms for health and safety
a) Legislation -written and proved laws set in place by the government
b) Code of practise- Set by industry bodies recommended to use when working
c) Work place policies – Rules written by employers and in the contract of employment.
Q9 Briefly describe how to position myself and client to maintain safety when working.
My client should be comfortable and upright, looking into the mirror. I should be stood upright so I have got even balance not over stretching, so I don’t cause myself injury
