Mobile phones: A blessing or a curse? DiscussionMobile phones are becoming a very arguable topic of today. In thisdiscussion I will present reasons from both sides of the argument. The technology of today is constantly increasing and the world has tobe accepting of this. Mobile phones have become a definite essential.Communication between people is easier and fast. Though, thedisadvantages brought along with the fast grown technology cannot beignored. These problems not only influence people personally but alsothe society.Symptoms caused by the radiation of mobile phones are one of the mainproblems. Scientists believe that the radiation from mobile phones maycause the users to have headaches, earaches, blurring of vision andeven cause cancer. Though, these problems are still under research andalthough it can be seen a disadvantage, users are told to minimisetheir usage to reduce the risk even more which is about 1 in 11 000users getting cancer possibly caused from this radiation.Mobile phone addiction is a big social problem. The age drop of themobile phone users is increasing , most teenagers now own their ownmobile phone. Teenagers are becoming more and more engaged on theirmobile phones all the time, on phone calls, using SMS texting ,personalising the mobile with ring tones and pictures etc. Besidesthis, they are constantly being upgraded ,new models arereleasednearly everyday, so you have to spend more money trying to keep upwith the latest trends.Mobile phone bullying is also another issue among the disadvantages ofmobile phones. Mobile phone bullying is using offensive words andbehavior vis SMS texting. Not only with bullying, but generally, people tend to say things in a text message that they normallywouldn’t or couldn’t say face to face with someone. On the other handtexting is a huge advantage for those who are uncomfortable talking onthe phone. People can double check what they have written and can makesure they haven’t said anything wrong. They are able to communicatewithout getting embarrassed and feeling uncomfortable by talking onthe phone.Mobile phones with camera functions are causing privacy problems. Manypeople are misusing the usage on the camera phones such as using it asa hidden camera to take photos which are private. But the camerafunction, if used appropriately, can also be very useful.Photos can betaken easily and quickly without messing around with complicatedthings on a standard digital camera. The spreading of computer virusesis also a problem for mobile phones. Just like computer viruses, mobile phone viruses will eventually become severe and causemalfunctions on everyday mobile phones. Some other bad points of mobile phones are that they are intrusive. When your out with friends there is now almost always someone who willget out their phone and start texting, this can put you in an annoyingand uncomfortable situation. There is also no guarantee of coverage. The accessories cost a lot of extra money with most of them not evenadding to the phones overall performance.Although there are many bad points to having a mobile phone, they doalso have their benefits. Mobile phones can be used when it might notbe easy to use a normal telephone, such as when you have had a carcrash and are unable to move or if you are being attacked by someone. They are definitely useful during emergency situations , which is whythey are now compulsory in some work places.Mobile phones enable safety for teenagers. Parents can almost alwayscontact their children to find out where they are. Some schools notifystudent’s parents via text if their child has skipped class. The main benefit of the mobile phone is that they are a quick and easymeans of communication. Some companies are combining technology withmobile phones including music players and internet, etc makingportable communication even more convenient. To conclude, I think the positive impacts of the mobile phone outweighthe negatives because although there are many negatives, they arerelatively minor. Though I definitely wouldn’t consider the mobilephone a ‘blessing’. They are simply a form of technology which wecannot escape. The technology of today is getting more complicated andthe devices are getting smaller. We just have to accept this and gowith the flow.Word count: 730Good health is the responsibility of an individual ArgumentGood health is a very controversial topic argued today. This isbecause many different people all over the world have different viewsand ideas about it. In this essay, I will attempt in persuading youthat good health the responsibility of an individual. It shouldn’t be anyone else’s problem if you are unhappy with yourhealth. Unless of course it is their career or job to help you (Eg, ifthey are a fitness trainer). Even if someone is seeking help abouttheir health, it should be entirely up to them to make that decision.I think that good health should be achieved by someone’s own personalmotivation. Although encouragement is sometimes necessary, it shouldgenerally be someone’s own decision to improve their health. We shouldbe independent enough to take care of our own bodies, we shouldn’thave to rely on someone else to keep us healthy. It’s starting tobecome a trend to get personal trainers the way celebrities do. Thisis just pure laziness and it’s a ridiculous concept because peopleshouldn’t need someone else to stand there and tell you to do fiftypush ups to get you motivated. A better alternative would be to gethealth advice where you can work out the best way to get healthy andwhich suits your body and which fits in with your lifestyle.Being healthy is one’s own choice, thus it should be their ownresponsibility. Good health isn’t just about eating well, it’s aboutexercising , taking care of your body by not smoking , not doing drugsand being positive and optimistic about life. These things are allself inflicted. You decide on your own whether you will start smoking, therefore you should be the one who decides to stop smoking. Youshould be the one who decides whether you want be more healthy. Andyou should get healthy yourself, by yourself. If good health wasn’t the responsibility of individuals, people wouldjust become lazier and lazier. Humans can survive independently, wewern’t born for someone else to have to make sure we’re healthy.Growing up is a different story because the food we eat and ourgeneral lifestyle is influenced by our parents or guardians so thestatement being argued is assumingly referring to independent adults.Adults should be able to control their health on their own, withoutthe influence of others. The amount of unhealthy people is increasingand this is possibly because good health isn’t encouraged enough andsome people just don’t seem to care any more. This is not because goodhealth is the responsibility of individuals, it’s because some peopleneed more encouragement than others.Good health programs could be should be promoted more strongly to helpsolve this problem. If this was enforced, it doesn’t make theresponsibility of being healthy any less your own, it just encouragesthose who have problems getting healthy. To conclude, I believe that it’s fairly obvious that good healthshould be the responsibility of an individual and nobody else’s.
