The Odyssey, Homer
The Odyssey by Homer is an all-time classic in the world today. Some may think this epic poem is just an exciting and adventurous story, but it is much more than that. It is the story of every human’s life. Odysseus, the main character in the story, can be seen as everyone in the world facing their day-to- day problems. The Odyssey has many events that can relate to everyday life such as obstacles, addictions and how there is a good and bad side to every person.
When someone is trying to get something done other things can often get in the way. Odysseus had to go through many obstacles before getting to hid home land. For example, when Odysseus and part of his crew got stuck in the Cyclops’ cave it was a setback to getting home. “Neither replay nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering on the floor.” (Lines 215-220) Not only did this event take up a lot of time and overall was a major setback, but Odysseus also lost a few of his men which makes the trip back home even harder with less men to help out. Daily citizens encounter distractions every day. A student might be trying to get homework done but their cell phone keeps going off. Or maybe a parent took papers home from work to look through but his or her kids keep interrupting him or her. People can usually get distracted while doing something important, something that must get done, just like Odysseus did in The Odyssey.
A lot of people can get addicted to things in their lifetime. Not only can people get addicted to drugs or alcohol but other things also. While Odysseus was traveling home, he came across the island of the Lotus Eaters. On this island there were people living off a plat called Lotus. This plant made one not want to return home and made him or her not care about the outside world any longer. “They fell in, soon enough, with Lotus-Eaters, who showed no will to do us harm, only offering the sweet Lotus to our friends-but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland.” (Lines 77-83) This can relate to the addictions people encounter with every day. For example, one may get addicted to cocaine or heroin. These substances are very dangerous drugs that can ruin one’s life forever, but people who get addicted to them clam that it brings them to a “good place.” Just like the Lotus can do once you eat it. The Lotus plant that is described in The Odyssey represents that people all of the world can get addicted to things very easily, just by trying them once.
We all have good and bad sides to ourselves, just like Odysseus did. Odysseus was a wonderful hero; very clever and wise. For example, not only did Odysseus have to pass the island of the Lotus Eaters but he also had to pass the island of the Sirens. The Sirens, which were bird-like-mermaid creatures, would sing a song that would lour in sailors and would capture them and eat them for their meals. When Odysseus heard about this island, he came up with a very smart idea, “I carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them in my hands until they softened-no long task, for a burning heat came down from Helios, lord of high noon, Going forward I carried wax along the like, and laid it thick on their ears.” (Lines 544-550) What Odysseus was very clever and overall was a great idea. Even though Odysseus was very wise and clever, there were also aspects of him that brought out his ugly side. “Odysseus drew to his fist the cruel head of an arrow for Antinous just as the young man leaned to lift his beautiful drinking cup, embossed, two-handed, golden: the cup was in his fingers: the wine was even at his lips: and did he dream of death? How could he? In that revelry amid his throng of friends who would imagine a single for-though a strong foe indeed- could dare to bring death’s pain on him and his throat,”(Lines 1252-1260 As one could see, Odysseus could get very violent at time, bringing out the bad side of his personality. Just like everyone else in the world, Odysseus has a good and bad side to himself.
The Odyssey by Homer contains many occurrences that happen in people’s everyday life. Not only is this epic poem a wonderful and superior story but it can also open someone’s eyes to what is really happening in the world today. This poem is overall an exciting story about human being’s life and should be read more often by young students.
