Simon Effect
- Both the Stroop and the Simon Effect seem like similar cognitive processes because reaction times slow down due to interference. What is the major difference between these two phenomenon?
For Stroop effect, the interference comes from the stimulus identification, where the word “ BLUE” is written in red, and the observer need to identify the color of the word instead of its semantic meaning. In Simon Effect, the interference occurs in the response selection stage where during this process, the participant will need to identify the rule, for this experiment, the color of the square to the correct left and right response by hitting two different keys on the left and right side of the keyboard.
In Simon Effect, the position of given words which act as a stimulus on the screen overlaps with the position of the relative stimulus dimension whether it is on the left or right side of keyboard. As a result, irrelevant dimension of the stimulus activates the corresponding response and affects the decision making on non-corresponding side. This leads to the behavior of faster and accurate response where the stimulus and answer are at same side compared to the opposite location between stimulus and relative stimulus dimension.
- After completing this lab you notice that your answer the desk phone with a different hand depending on which side the receiver cord is hanging down from. For example, if the phone is on the right side, you answer it with your right hand. How can you explain this behavior?
As shown in the result of Simon Effect experiment, the location dimension of stimulus will affect the relevant stimulus dimension. In this condition, the receiver cord of the phone is placed at the right side of the desk. When the phone rings as a stimulus, it triggers the corresponding response from the relevant stimulus dimension where our right hand will pick up the phone instead of our left hand. If our left hand tended to answer the phone located at the right side of the desk, it will be irrelevant response to the stimulus dimension.
- You’ve injured your arm in a skiing accident and now you have it in a cast. Your psychology professor does not have a great deal sympathy for you, so she decides not to give an extension on your major paper. You sit down to type out your essay, but it is awkward because you can only use one hand. If you injured your right arm, what word would take longer to type, “was” or “oil”? Explain your answer.
I would have taken longer time to write “oil” as it was located on the right side of my keyboard and I can only use my left hand in typing. This is because my left hand usually covers the left part of the keyboard while my right hand in charge of the right side of my keyboard. The reason why I would face difficulties in hitting the right side of my keyboard with left hand is due to the irrelevant stimulus dimension response in corresponding to the stimulus location. The keys for the word “oil” are the stimulus and its locations are situated on the right side of the keyboard. The action of moving our left hand to hit the right side of the keyboard is not relevant to stimulus dimension which corresponds to the location of stimulus. Therefore, our movement is slower and awkward as it opposes our normal behavior.
